We LOVE Carriker Cottage! And based on the feedback we get from our guests, we're not alone. But this property has come a long way since we first saw it back in 2018. Did you know that our family actually lived in this house for a while? Let's go on a little journey back in time to see how this space has transformed over the last two years.
Here's what Carriker Cottage looked like the first sunny day we saw it:
Right away we could see that it had good bones loaded with potential. And for the brave adventurous souls out there, here are a few of the real estate photos from For Sale By Owner just to give you an idea of this property's more colorful past.
So, we bought it and moved in! Here it is in all of our messy moved-in glory...
The renovations started almost immediately.
First up, the kitchen! The cabinets were in great shape, but we knew we wanted to change the color and update the backsplash and countertops for a more modern cottage look.
After lots of paint, some new stainless appliances, gorgeous new countertops, new flooring, a stainless farmhouse sink, and a beadboard backsplash, the kitchen transformation was complete. Lighting and an area rug completed the look.
Next to the kitchen, the breakfast nook got an update too. It started out looking like this when we moved in (complete with doughnuts on the table)...
But we decided to go bold with a black accent wall, updated lighting and added some black chairs to the table to complete the look.
Let's talk about the flooring. If you know us, you know that we love a good project, and we decided to tackle the flooring ourselves - while we were living in the house. This may not be the most efficient way to handle new flooring installation, but here's how we made this work.
First, We selected a Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) flooring that we've used before and we know how to install. Our favorite brand is NuCore because it's very durable, looks great, and comes with a fantastic warranty. In our situation, an added benefit was that once the product is installed, that's it. There's no additional finishing like sanding, staining, and sealing that comes with traditional hardwoods, so once they're installed, they're done!
Next, we moved all of the furniture out of one room, installed the flooring and attached the quarter round the baseboards, and moved the furniture back in.
We repeated this process from room to room until we had the entire house complete. And true to our Haigler "can-do" spirit, we did it with a deadline breathing down our neck: we were hosting Thanksgiving for our family, so we HAD to get it done!
We continued working on projects throughout the house, simplifying the color palette, updating fixtures and finishes where it was needed, replacing anything that was broken along the way, and taking rooms from looking like this:
One of the things that people LOVE about Carriker Cottage is the covered outdoor area we call The Gathering Porch because it's the perfect spot for family and friends to gather for any sort of celebration or just because. When we moved in, this part of the house literally didn't exist.
When we had to replace the roof, we saw that as an opportunity to rethink this side of the home and extend the roofline to create an expansive covered outdoor space.
The Gathering Porch is now one of our guests' favorite aspects of Carriker Cottage, and we have to say, it's one of ours too!
That's the story of how Carriker Cottage got its new look!
